Mission Statement

 READ ▪ CONNECT ▪ LEARN

The Mission of the BHM Regional Library system is to provide access to free public library services inclusive of technology, information, and ideas to the residents of Beaufort, Hyde and Martin counties. The libraries make available books, AV materials, computers, internet access, and digital resources for students of all ages and lifelong learners. Branches offer relevant programming to the communities for everyone with a special emphasis on literacy.  Outreach services are provided to daycares, childcare, and eldercare facilities.  Our resources are selected to meet the educational, informational, cultural, and recreational needs of local residents.

OBJECTIVE I — EDUCATION

— To promote the enjoyment of books and reading, encouraging the development of learning skills and lifelong independent learning in people of all ages for their self-development, education, and personal pursuits;

— To encourage young children to develop an interest in reading and learning through services for children, and for parents and children together;

— To assist students of all ages in meeting educational objectives established during their formal course of study, realizing that the public library is a supplemental, and not a primary, resource in this area;

— To cooperate in community efforts to improve literacy in the library service area.

OBJECTIVE II — INFORMATION

— To provide timely, accurate, and useful information for community residents to facilitate their activities in business, citizenship, and personal development, taking advantage of the technological advances which are rapidly developing in information delivery;

— To provide a point of access to the resources located in other libraries, and to technologically available databases;

OBJECTIVE III — LEISURE

— To provide current, high-demand, high-interest materials in a variety of formats for persons of all ages, to meet their leisure and recreational needs, as well as to encourage development of an informed citizenry;

— To provide a variety of cultural activities, both independently through its collections and sponsorship of such activities, and in concert with other community groups and organizations, helping publicize their activities, co-sponsor events, and through assistance in locating and using materials for program planning, projects, and the education of members of such groups.

OBJECTIVE IV — COMMUNITY AWARENESS

— To conduct an active and on-going public awareness program through a variety of media and program activities to alert the community to the resources available to them through their public library.
