Part-Time Library Clerk – 20 Hours/week BHM Main Library – Washington

BHM Main Library in Washington is hiring for a part-time Library Clerk. 

Starting pay is $7.72 approximately 20 hours per week.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

A library clerk is responsible for the accurate completion of library clerical tasks and for providing public services to patrons. Work involves responsibility for routine circulation, shelf maintenance, and clerical functions using an automated circulation system. Duties include checking books in and out, shelving library materials, inputting data, and answering phones. Library clerks work under the supervision of the branch librarian/manager.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

  • Checks books in and out using an automated circulation system
  • Places holds and requests books for patrons
  • Maintains daily statistical records
  • Handles money for fines and fees
  • Shelves materials accurately and reads shelves periodically to ensure that materials are neat and orderly
  • Provides limited reference and readers’ advisory to patrons, referring questions to library assistants and branch librarian/manager as needed
  • Assists with programs for all age groups if requested by the branch librarian/manager

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS

  • Good computer skills, including a familiarity with basic internet searching and the ability to use email and Microsoft Office software
  • Meets Level I and Level II of North Carolina’s Technology Competencies for Libraries
  • Ability to keyboard and maintain digital records with accuracy
  • Ability to alphabetize, file, and shelve books with accuracy
  • Ability to understand and follow written/oral instructions
  • Working knowledge of reader interest levels, books, authors, and reference materials
  • Ability to move throughout all areas of the library and to lift at least 55 pounds
  • Strong customer service skills and ability to maintain positive relationships with coworkers, supervisors, and the public

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma required; two year college degree preferred
  • Customer service and/or clerical experience preferred
  • Library experience preferred
